Remarks:
"Arctic-capable" (This means they can operate under the ice.)
Hull systems:
Maximum operating depth is 450 m.
· SSN 753 and 754 had partial HY-100 steel pressure hull sections so they could test fabrication procedures for the Seawolf class; the other ones have HY-80 steel hulls.
· Bow is made of glass-reinforced plastic (GRP) as a streamlined fairing over the spherical BQQ-5-A(V)1 sonar array.
· All have one Fairbanks-Morse 38D8Q diesel generator set and batteries for emergency propulsion.
· The reactor core should last 10-13 years between refueling.
· SSN 751 and later models have bow-mounted vice sail-mounted diving planes, the sail has been hardened for breaking through ice.
· Most are also equipped with additional anhedral fins at the stern which support towed arrays; these fins are fitted with seven-celled launchers for 127-mm countermeasures, these fins have also been added to a few earlier units of this class.
· There are two Ships Inertial Navigation System (SINS) which are being replaced by the Litton Marine WSSN-7 ring-laser gyro inertial navigation system.
Combat systems:
· SSN 751 and later models have the first-generation BSY-1 (formerly named SUBACS-Submarine Advanced Combat System) integrated sonar/weapons-control suite.
· One Mk 2 optical and the other Sperry Mk 18 multifunction periscopes are fitted.
· All have 12 vertical-launch tubes for Tomahawk cruise missiles, located between the forward end of the pressure hull and the spherical array for the BQQ-5 bow sonar.
· UGM-84-series Sub-Harpoon missiles were removed during 1996-97.
For gameplay purposes the 688(I)s will carry:
· Mark 48 ADCAP torpedoes
· TLAM: Tomahawk Land Attack Missiles (Cruise Missiles)
· TASM: Tomahawk Anti-Ship Missiles
(Note: In reality the supply of these is dwindling and most have been removed from service or converted to TLAM versions)
Role:
In addition to its Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) role, the 688(I)s are also involved with the following type of missions: the insertion of special forces, mine laying and precision strikes against land targets.
